Part A   Shot Conversations

Directions: In Part A, you will hear ten short conversations between two speakers. At the end of each conversation, a question will be asked about what was said. The conversation and the question will be spoken only once. After you hear a conversation and the question about it, read the four possible answers in your paper, and decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard.

1. M: Class 3 has four English lessons on Tuesday and Class 1 has three.

W: We have three, too, but we have four on Thursday.

Q: How many English lessons does Class 3 have on Tuesday?

2. W: I was told you were sick last week.

M: That’s true. I just got over the flu.

Q: What does the man mean?

3. M: Jane, have you returned the tapes to Bob?

W: Oh, you reminded me just now. Bob has asked for them for quite a few times, but I keep forgetting.

Q: What does Jane say about Bob?

4. W: How do you like Shanghai, Mr. Simpson?

M: Well, Shanghai is really worth visiting. But Shanghai has too many people, too many bicycles and too many cars.

Q: What does the man imply?

5. M: Jack sent you a bunch of flowers for your birthday and John a box of chocolates?

W: I got flowers from David and chocolates from Jack.

Q: Who did the woman get flowers from?

6. M: What shall we give Harry as a birthday present?

W: How about a picture of all of us?

Q: What does the woman suggest?

7. M: Will that be convenient for you if I call on you this afternoon?

W: Fine. Will 4 o’clock in the afternoon be OK?

Q: What is the man going to do this afternoon?

8. M: Sometimes I have trouble in sleeping.

W: Why don’t you have a glass of milk before going to bed?

Q: What can help the man sleep well?

9. M: David was absent from school for 3 days without asking for leave.

W: I asked him why he was so, he couldn’t come up with an answer.

Q: What can we learn from this conversation?

10. W: May I use the black pen in your box over there?

M: Where is the one I lent you yesterday?

Q: What can we learn from the conversation?

Part B  Passages

Directions: In Part B, you will hear two short passages, and you will be asked three questions on each of the passages. The passages will be read twice but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers in your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

The air surrounding us is quite important to everyone. Without air, we could not exist. Everyone understands that, but air is necessary in many other ways that are not always so obvious or widely known.

For example, if we didn’t have air, there would be no sound. Sound travels through air. Where there is no air, there is no sound. Without air, there would be no fire. There would be no automobiles. Since motors need air in order to operate.

Without air, there would be no winds or clouds. There would be no weather. The nighttime would be very cold and the day very hot. We would be forced to hide away from the sun all the time, as there would be no atmosphere to protect us from the sun’s deadly rays.

Questions:

11. Without air, which of the following are not likely to be found?

12. Without air, what would the weather be like?

13. Without air, why must we seek shelter from the sun?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.

In western countries packages can be sent in two different ways. One is through post offices owned by governments; the other is through private parcel services. The government post offices are less expensive and more readily available, but not always as convenient. When sending packages through private services, you can get many special services. For an extra fee, a private service will send someone to pick up and wrap your package for you. Most private services will deliver your package within 24 hours or receiving it, and some will even refund the price of the package, if it takes them longer to deliver it. These extra services are not cheap. However, if you need to have something delivered quickly and conveniently, private services are often worth the extra money.

Questions:

14. Which of the following is an advantage of the government owned post offices?

15. Which of the following special services do most private parcel services provide?

16. According to the passage, what will some private services do if they fail to deliver your package within 24 hours?

Part C  Longer Conversations

Directions: In part C, you will hear two longer conversations. The conversation will be read twice. After you hear each conversation, you will fill in the blanks according to what you have heard.

Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.

W: Good afternoon, doctor.

M: Good afternoon, Mrs. Black.

W: I’m not quite myself today.

M: What’s the matter?

W: I think I’ve caught a bad cold.

M: Have you taken your temperature?

W: Yes, I’m running a fever.

M: Do you have a sore throat?

W: Yes, and a headache.

M: OK, don’t worry. Take the medicine according to the directions and get at least three days off work. Besides, remember to drink a lot of water each day.

(Now listen to it again, please.)

Blanks 21 through 24 are based on the following conversation.

W: How much are the apples?

M: Thirty cents a pound. How many do you want?

W: I want a dozen.

M: That’s two pounds and a half. Anything else?

W: What about the bananas?

M: Eighty cents a pound.

W: Give me that bunch, please.

M: Sure. That’s 3 pounds. Is that all?

W: Yes. How much do I owe you?

M: Let me see. It’s 3 dollars and 15.

W: Here’s the money.

M: Thank you.

(Now listen to it again, please.)

Writing (for reference)

Dear Editor,

Recently we have had a heated discussion on whether people should keep pets at home in cities.

Some students think it is a good idea to keep pets because many old people who live alone can get some comfort from pets as their companions. Besides, getting on well with animals will make our life interesting. On the contrary, the other students are against the idea. In their opinions, if too many people keep pets at home, it does harm to the environment. Worse still, pets may make too much noise and even attack people.

I like animals, so I don’t think it bad to keep pets at home. But pet owners should be very considerate of others when they deal with their lovely pets.  And it is necessary for us to take some measures to prevent them from polluting our environment or spreading diseases.

Look forward to receiving your reply!

Yours sincerely,

Mary
