How to empty a bowl of worries

Life is filled with things that must be done and problems that must be faced. Life is not “just a bowl of cherries” as an old song says; it’s often a “bowl of worries.” And this “bowl of worries” is what causes stress*. Stress is how your body reacts to challenging situations. Stress can cause a lot of physical problems like headaches, loss of sleep and feelings of sadness and depression. Too much stress can ruin your health. Many students today complain of being stressed out because of all the pressure they get from school and from their parents. But there are certain stress management techniques that you can use to handle stress.

First of all, learn how to manage your time. This means arranging blocks of time to get your work done — perhaps fifteen to thirty minutes for each task and also some time to review past lessons. Second, take care of yourself. That means eating well (easy on the junk food!), exercising every day (take a little walk), and sleeping at least eight hours a night. Students who sleep eight hours a night get better grades than students who sleep less. Third, be optimistic. People who are optimistic handle stress better than people who are pessimistic. You may be under a cloud of stress but try to let your sunny cheerfulness break through.

By using these stress management techniques you will be able to control the stress in your life. These techniques may not make your life “a bowl of cherries” but they can at least empty the bowl of some of your worries.
