in Ask students to discuss in groups about anything they know about New York, the irreplaceable modern city in the world. They are required to list the key words concerning this metropolis. Then ask the students to compare Shanghai, the city where they come from, with New York City. It may sound difficult for them, as the two cities are both modern, fully developed with fast pace. If possible, let the students judge advantages and disadvantages of living in those modern cities; if they have the opportunity of living in small cities, what is their choice? Then the topic of this article may be introduced in the 21st century, with the help of internet, “will New York be necessary”? Through this lead-in part, students’ interest of reading this passage may be aroused. Task two:
Reading Read the passage carefully, and answer the following questions. 1. What is the characteristic of New York, and when did it become prosperous? 2. What factors are believed to cut the need for a central city like New York? 3. What is Robert’s opinion towards the necessity of New York? 4. Play Divide students into two groups. 10-15 minutes are needed to get them prepared. The students are required to make a debate on the topic “Will New York be necessary in the 21st century”? They may use any evidence mentioned in the article to support their own view point. The debate will be carried on like a formal one.
