Arbor Day  ... Arbor Year

　　Countries around the world celebrate Arbor Day to remember the importance of our environment and a healthy planet. China celebrates this special day on March 12, which is also called Tree Planting Day.

　　When we plant a tree, we take a small step closer toward a healthy environment. This is a positive thing that we do, but we should also remember that the goal of Arbor Day is not just to do a good deed one day of the year. Our effort should become part of how we live our lives.

　　Perhaps this coming Arbor Day we should do more than just plant a small tree. Maybe we could promise not to waste paper or use disposable chopsticks for the year. We could collect money to donate to an environment fund, or grow our own green plants and make sure they stay healthy. We might even want to do our best not to eat as much meat. This could help reduce the size of our carbon footprint*.

　　There is an idiom that says, “It is important to see the forest for the trees.” This means that we should not get so concerned with small details that we fail to see the big picture. Planting a small tree and then forgetting about it, is not as productive as planting a tree knowing that it is only a part of the big goal of creating a forest ... Creating a way of living our lives.

　　As we can see, there are many ways to participate in Arbor Day. What will you do to help our environment? On Arbor Day, plan to do something positive. At the same time, know that your actions should last all year if they are to make a real difference in the world. Good luck.
